On November 5 1997, Epic Soundtracks (Kevin Godfrey on his real name) was found dead without any kind of explication inside his appartement in London West Hampstead.
Early 70's,he was this punky adolescent behind the drums inside The Swell Maps, with his brother Nikki Sudden, and future TVP's Jowe Head - the Swell Maps understanded anarchie as a chaotic mix between Can & T. Rex... Hmmm Best punk band ever.
Then, Kevin was working for the Rough Trade Shop while drumming for Pere Ubu, Red Crayola, Roland S. Howard,or the Jacobites. He made a kraut ep with Jowe Head you better search, one instrumental single for Rough Trade with Robert Wyatt in 1981. He only released his first album on his own in 1992 with the compagnie of Sonic Youth and Dinosaur Jr, a deep elegant and fragile pop music strongly inspired by Brian Wilson and Alex Chilton.
In september 1992, the promo of this Rise Above album brings him to the Radio France studio for an interview with Bernard Lenoir and Arnaud Viviant. Epic was so shy that the interview has been soon transforming in a piano solo acoustic set.
I'm so a fan of his all work ( a total of 5 lp, all emotives) that it was non possible for me extracting one song among my long as an harm list of fave. So, i decide to post, in memory of his art, this radio archive never ever been published since, even in the several post mortem anthologies released this last forteen years (a new one is to come soon).

En l'an 2000, j'avais rencontré Mathias Cousin et David Blot pour la sortie du premier volume du chant de la machine. Le prétexte était de les interviewer sur une bédé qui était culte dès sa sortie tant elle entrait en résonance avec son époque. De mon côté, j'avais arrêté de lire des "illustrés" à 14 ans, je n'étais jamais allée à une soirée Respect et toute musique estampillée "French Touch" me donnait envie de m'inscrire à la LCR (la France qui gagnait était alors pour moi celle qui se couchait tard). Je crois que ce soir-là, du côté de la rue Montorgueil, je me suis contenté de tenir le micro laissant à mon acolyte le soin de poser des questions sur cette bédé qui racontait l'histoire d'une musique, la House, à laquelle je ne voulais rien comprendre. À chaque fois que j'achetais l’un des disques que Didier Lestrade, un des acteurs du chant de la machine, chroniquait dans le libé du week-end (il n'avait pas son pareil pour vous donner envie d'écouter des trucs ignobles), j'étais déçue: cette musique ne me disait rien sur ma vie, ni sur le monde dans lequel je vivais. J'avais les Smiths pour ça. Pourtant le chant de la machine était déjà une bédé passionnante car elle révélait un nouveau continent à la jeune fille indie – et bornée- que j'étais à l'époque : si j'aime Frankie Knuckles ou Sylvester aujourd'hui c'est grâce à elle. La lecture du second volume fut plus compliquée, elle arrivait après la disparition de Mathias Cousin, et racontait une histoire à laquelle j'avais participé, celle des raves et des ecstas, que je ne reconnaissais pas trop (chacun doit avoir la sienne). Le trait comme le récit s'étaient affranchis des règles pour partir vers un ailleurs assez indéfinissable. Onze ans plus tard, Mathias n’est plus là et David est toujours fan de New Order, relire leur oeuvre à quatre mains (à l’occasion de sa réédition en un seul volume, plus quelques bonus déments) m’a vraiment foutu les jetons : putain cette bédé a vraiment mieux vieilli que moi.

Back in the fall of 2002, my dear friends and DJs Duane Harriott, Lindsey Caldwell and myself got together to throw a party called NegroClash at the late, legendary club APT in New York. The name was a direct response to the rise of Electroclash, and the mis-appropriation and white-washing of the term "Electro", and our larger mission was to show how black music has been at the forefront of integrating electronic sounds and instruments into both underground and popular music. We did not let that mission get in the way of getting very drunk and dancing, however. Our first guest was Mantronix, followed the next month by Afrika Bambaataa, in one of his first appearances in downtown NYC in years. Over the following years we were lucky enough to share our booth with heroes like Juan Atkins, Kool DJ Red Alert, Larry Heard (Mr. Fingers, in his first DJ appearance in New York ever), Marshall Jefferson, Baltimore Club legend DJ Technics, Jazzy Joyce, DJ Spinna, and Fab 5 Freddy, just to name a few. We still throw the party every few months in NYC, and it's more fun than it ever was. And we just made a new mix for the podcast series that our friends at Fool's Gold Records do which should give you a good taste of how we get down. The summer heat and humidity in NYC can get even the funkiest hairstyle down - you never know when you might need a little activator. Start with a small amount at the ears, and apply liberally.

A titre personnel, j'essaie de me tenir aussi loin que possible des collectionneurs de disques. La conversation des bibliothécaires du vinyl (souvent des dj's) m'ennuie au plus haut point et la névrose qui consiste à pister des pressages obscurs de disques souvent chiants "m'en touche une sans faire bouger l'autre" pour paraphraser Marco Dos Santos (ou Joël Séria, son guide spirituel). Pourtant, ce livre de Philippe Dumez vaut le détour : il est érudit, drôle, mais jamais ennuyeux, il est même touchant par moment. Voici 5 extraits choisis par l'auteur, accompagnés des vidéos correspondantes :

340. Je me souviens de "Coeur défiguré", la face b de "Succès fou" de Christophe. Un des plus beaux hommages à Suicide qu'il m'ait été donné d'entendre.

298. Je me souviens me prendre la tête au sujet du sample qu'on entend dans "Scooby Snacks" des Fun Lovin' Criminals. Je connais ça par coeur, mais impossible de savoir où je l'ai entendu. Je finis par lire qu'il s'agit d'une boucle "empruntée" à Tones on Tail. Ca alors, si même les rappeurs se mettent à ressortir leurs disques de new-wave...

157. Je me souviens d'avoir pénétré dans la loge d'Anne Clark pour lui faire signer mon billet de concert. Elle marque "Love" dessus et je ressors en rougissant.

333. Je me souviens des adaptations en français de Jefferson Airplane, de Marvin Gaye et de Gene Pitney signées Herbert Léonard, des années avant Chateauvallon. Sa carrière s'arrête le jour où il manque de perdre la vie dans un accident de voiture. Que serait-il devenu sans ça ? Notre Bryan Ferry ?

037. Je ne me souviens pas avoir jamais su qui chante sur "One More Kiss, Dear", ce slow au parfum surrané qui figure sur la bande originale de "Blade Runner".
